workshops

We offer community workshops for groups of all sizes, ages and abilities tailored to the needs of your group.

We offer workshops in three artforms: Taiko drumming workshops for team and community building, bon odori for dance and movement, or origami for a quiet and meditative hands-on experience.

Build confidence and communication in teams, create space for creativity and conversation, learn about a new culture and try something new.

Taiko Drumming

Taiko drumming is an energetic form of team drumming with its roots in Japan. It is taught through 4 principles and incorporates rhythm and movement, and Japanese culture, respect, mindfulness, rhythm, movement, mind and body awareness. Participants come together as a team to listen, perform, move and own their voices and space at the drum.

Team is at the heart of  taiko. We play together, we respect each other, we have fun together, we create safe spaces together, we trust each other, we listen to each other and we share the #Taikolove and we have fun!

Bon Odori Dance

Bon odori dances are at the heart of Obon festivals throughout Japan and have become associated with summer. Each region has their own traditional dance styles reflecting their traditions and cultural heritage. Styles and music used vary across Japan, but the moves are generally simple and fairly easy to learn, so that everyone can join in.

Origami

Origami is the art of paper-folding. Its name derives from Japanese words ori (“folding”) and kami (“paper”). Traditional origami consists of folding a single sheet of square paper into a sculpture without cutting, gluing, taping, or even marking it. Origami has increasingly been recognised as being an effective way to practice mindfulness and to increase well-being.

“When you fold, the ritual and the act of creation is more important than the final result. When your hands are busy your heart is serene”

Akira Yoshizawa – the grandfather of modern origami
