ようこそ & Welcome
Foyle Obon is a pioneering Japanese arts organisation leading the way in the development and delivery of Japanese arts in Northern Ireland.
We focus on local and international partnership building, commissioning and education projects, supporting emerging and established artists and building community and intercultural understanding. We are home to the Foyle Obon Japanese Festival – the only Obon festival in Europe and the only place in Northern Ireland where you can get good Kakigori shaved ice!
Foyle Obon 2026
Welcome to Foyle Obon Festival 2026! We’re delighted to invite you to a full week of celebration, as the festival grows into a vibrant programme of events bringing Japanese culture, taiko drumming, and community connection to life across the city.
This year, we are especially excited to welcome back San Jose Taiko. Their return means a great deal to us, bringing their energy, generosity, and taiko love once again to Foyle Obon, and sharing in the spirit of exchange that sits at the heart of everything we do.
Foyle Obon is about connection and celebrating our shared humanity. Through Japanese arts and meaningful cultural exchange, we continue to build something special together. A heartfelt thank you to our funders, supporters, and volunteers, your support makes this all possible. We look forward to sharing this unforgettable week with you.

To celebrate we will be looking back and sharing some of the highlights and special moments for some #foyleobonflashbackFridays throughout 2024!
これを記念して、2024年の#foyleobonflashbackFridaysのために、いくつかのハイライトと特別な瞬間を振り返り、共有したいと思います!

Taiko research project
In collaboration with Ulster University, this study investigated the effects of participating in taiko drumming classes on individuals’ physical health, psychological wellbeing, and sense of community belonging. Through qualitative analysis and evaluation, we aimed to deepen our understanding of the role of the arts, particularly performing arts, in enhancing mental health outcomes.
